Nomad 14 Plus Solar Panel Review: Compact Power for Your Adventures

When you're off the grid, every ounce and every watt counts. The Nomad 14 Plus solar panel is designed for adventurers who need reliable power without the bulk. In this review, we'll dive deep into its features, performance, and real-world usability to help you decide if it's the right companion for your next trip.

Whether you're a weekend camper, a thru-hiker, or someone preparing for emergencies, a compact solar panel can be a game-changer. The Nomad 14 Plus promises to deliver efficient charging in a lightweight package, but does it live up to the hype? Let's find out.

Key Features of the Nomad 14 Plus

The Nomad 14 Plus is built with portability in mind. It folds down to a compact size that easily fits into a backpack, and its rugged construction is designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor use. The panel features high-efficiency solar cells that convert sunlight into usable power, and it comes with integrated kickstands for optimal positioning.

One of the standout features is its versatility. The Nomad 14 Plus can charge a variety of devices directly via its USB-A and USB-C ports, or it can be paired with a compatible power station for larger energy storage. Its IP67 water resistance ensures it can handle unexpected rain showers, making it a reliable choice for any weather.

• Foldable design for easy transport
• High-efficiency monocrystalline cells
• USB-A and USB-C output ports
• IP67 water-resistant rating
• Integrated kickstands for optimal sun angle

Performance and Charging Speed

In our tests, the Nomad 14 Plus delivered consistent power output under direct sunlight. On a clear day, it was able to charge a smartphone from 0% to 100% in about 2.5 hours, which is impressive for a panel of this size. When paired with a compatible power station, it can slowly but steadily top up your battery bank, providing a reliable source of energy for longer trips.

It's important to note that the Nomad 14 Plus is not designed to power high-draw appliances like refrigerators or power tools. Instead, it excels at keeping your essential devices—like phones, GPS units, and cameras—charged. For those who need a bit more power, consider pairing it with a larger solar panel or a power station like the skylight-work-camping-light-867edc09d42abac55ea14fb1-491367">Yeti 500 + Skylight, which offers more capacity for extended adventures.

• Charges a smartphone in ~2.5 hours in direct sunlight
• Best for small devices and trickle charging power stations
• Not suitable for high-power appliances

Portability and Build Quality

Weighing in at just over 2 pounds, the Nomad 14 Plus is incredibly lightweight. Its foldable design means it can be stowed away in a backpack without taking up much space, and the included carrying case adds an extra layer of protection. The panel feels sturdy, with a durable fabric exterior that can handle being tossed around in the back of a truck or on the trail.

The integrated kickstands are a thoughtful addition, allowing you to angle the panel towards the sun for maximum efficiency. The USB ports are protected by a weatherproof flap, and the panel itself is rated IP67, meaning it can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. This level of durability makes it a great choice for kayaking, boating, or any water-adjacent activity.

• Weighs only 2.1 lbs
• Folds to the size of a small laptop
• IP67 water-resistant
• Integrated kickstands for optimal sun exposure

Comparing to Other Compact Solar Panels

When compared to other portable solar panels in its class, the Nomad 14 Plus stands out for its combination of efficiency and portability. Many competing panels offer similar wattage but lack the robust build quality and water resistance. The Nomad 14 Plus also includes both USB-A and USB-C outputs, which is not always the case at this price point.

For those who need a bit more power, the (2) Ranger 300 BC Solar Panel Bundle offers a larger footprint and higher wattage, but it's also significantly bulkier. The Nomad 14 Plus is best for ultralight adventurers and minimalists who prioritize weight and packability above all else.

• More portable than larger panels like the Ranger 300 BC
• USB-C output is a plus for modern devices
• Better water resistance than many competitors

Real-World Use Cases

The Nomad 14 Plus is perfect for a variety of scenarios. For hikers and backpackers, it's a lightweight way to keep your phone and GPS charged on multi-day treks. For campers, it can power your campsite lighting and charge your camera batteries. It's also an excellent addition to your emergency preparedness kit, ensuring you have a way to generate power when the grid goes down.

Pairing it with a compact power bank like the Flip 12 or Flip 36 allows you to store energy during the day and use it at night. This combination is ideal for those who want to minimize their environmental footprint while enjoying the outdoors.

• Ideal for backpacking, camping, and hiking
• Great for emergency backup power
• Pairs well with portable power banks for energy storage

The Nomad 14 Plus is a stellar choice for anyone in need of a compact, reliable solar panel. Its combination of portability, durability, and performance makes it a standout in its category. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or just starting to explore off-grid living, this panel is a worthy investment. For more power-hungry needs, consider upgrading to a larger system like the Yeti PRO 4000 + (4) Ranger 300 BC Solar Generator, but for everyday adventures, the Nomad 14 Plus is hard to beat.
